Hydrodilatation (Hydrodistension) Therapy

Hydrodilatation (Hydrodistension) Therapy: Non-surgical relief for shoulder stiffness and pain

Struggling with a stiff, painful shoulder? You may be experiencing frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis. This is a condition that restricts movement and can take months or even years to resolve. At UBC Sport and Exercise Medicine, we offer hydrodilatation as an effective, minimally invasive treatment to help restore your shoulder mobility and reduce pain.

What is Hydrodilatation?

Hydrodilatation (also called hydrodistension) is a non-surgical procedure that involves injecting fluid into the shoulder joint to gently stretch the tight joint capsule. This allows for improved range of motion, reduced inflammation and pain, and enhanced results when used alongside physiotherapy.

The procedure typically includes a mix of sterile saline, local anesthetic, and a corticosteroid, and is done under ultrasound guidance for precision and comfort.

Who Can Benefit from Hydrodilatation / Hydrodistension therapy?

Hydrodilatation is commonly used for:

  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • Patients with shoulder stiffness unresponsive to physiotherapy
  • Individuals looking for alternatives to surgery
  • Those in the early or middle stages of frozen shoulder

What to Expect During Treatment

This is an outpatient procedure and takes approximately 15–30 minutes. An ultrasound-guided injection ensures accuracy. You may feel mild pressure or a sensation of fullness during the injection. Most patients resume or begin active physiotherapy immediately afterward. Recovery involves gradual improvement in motion and pain relief.

Why Choose Hydrodilatation?

Without treatment, frozen shoulder can  significantly limit daily function. Hydrodilatation is a safe and evidence-based option that can shorten recovery time and help you return to work, sport, and everyday life faster.
