UBC SEM addresses the sports injury and fitness-related healthcare needs of the province. Our multidisciplinary approach to healthcare involves state-of-the-art medical care, diagnostic facilities, fitness, and health improvement and lifestyle programs for the general population as well as recreational and competitive athletes. The clinic includes a laboratory, treatment and testing facilities. Our strong academic presence improves services to the community and enhanced awareness are distinct to the University of British Columbia.
UBC is recognized as the birthplace of sport medicine, where seminal studies on stress and overuse injuries, innovative surgical techniques, novel physiotherapy approaches to injury and the use of imaging in musculoskeletal medicine originated.
We offer traditional “reactive” medical care as well as new programs for “proactive” health maintenance, prevention and performance enhancement. Exercise-related clinical care, human performance testing and clinical exercise testing are available on site. A more focused, accessible sport and exercise medicine program and healthcare team assists all aspects of the community to develop life-long health and fitness habits that offer the potential optimize quality of life.
