Dr. McKenzie was one of the original physicians (with Drs. Doug Clement and Jack Taunton) who was invited by the university to establish the UBC Sports Medicine Clinic in 1979. He has been the team physician for the Canadian Canoe Team for over 30 years and has attended ten Olympic Games. Dr. McKenzie has served as the President of the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology and recently as Chair of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

Dr. McKenzie is the founder of Abreast In A Boat, a women’s dragon boat team composed of breast cancer survivors. This special blend of paddling as medicine has spread worldwide. ​

In December 2021 Dr. McKenzie was appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada for his expertise in sports medicine and for his seminal research on the effectiveness of exercise as an intervention for breast cancer patients.
