Cortisone Injections for Joint Pain Relief

Experiencing joint pain or inflammation?

Cortisone injections (also called corticosteroid injections) are fast-acting, non-surgical treatments used to reduce pain and swelling in conditions like osteoarthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis.

At UBC Sport and Exercise Medicine in Vancouver, we offer ultrasound guided cortisone injections for precision and effectiveness.

How Do Cortisone Injections Work?

Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications. When injected directly into a painful or inflamed joint or soft tissue, they help to:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Relieve pain
  • Improve mobility

These treatments are more commonly used as a treatment for acute injury, often with inflammation.  For injuries related to osteoarthritis, check out our page on Hyaluronic Acid injections.  In some cases, both injections may be used at different stages of treatment.

Conditions Treated with Cortisone Injections

Cortisone injections are commonly used for:

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder pain (e.g., rotator cuff impingement, bursitis)
  • Hip bursitis or arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow / Golfer’s elbow (epicondylitis)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

When Are Cortisone Injections Helpful?

Cortisone is most effective when:

  • You have acute inflammation causing significant pain
  • Other conservative treatments (NSAIDs, physiotherapy) have failed
  • You want short-term pain relief to help with rehab or return to activity
